"It's something worth doing once in a lifetime, and although I hesitated to do it in an organized manner, I realized that I had made the best decision. Our guide was Monica, a pleasant person who provided us with valuable information and made sure we had a great time. We followed her recommendations also for other activities in Milan, and it was perfect. I highly recommend it."

Which Day Trip from Milan Actually Puts You on the Bernina Express
Seven tours, two kinds of train, and a long coach ride either way. The differences are in the small print.
People search “Bernina Express from Milan” and then book a tour that does not use the Bernina Express. That is not a trick. The day trips mostly ride the Rhaetian Railway’s regional red train over the same pass, in second class, because its windows open and it needs no reservation. Only a few tours put you in the panoramic Bernina Express, and they say so.
This page sorts the Milan day trips by that difference, then by price and length.

Read the train column before the price column. If the panoramic car is the whole point for you, there is one clear choice in the list. If you want the open window, nearly everything else qualifies.
The panoramic option: Frigerio Viaggi
Frigerio’s day leaves from Piazza della Repubblica in Milan (metro M3, Repubblica) and goes straight to St. Moritz, about three hours by coach. You get free time by the lake, then board the Bernina Express in the afternoon for Tirano, past the Morteratsch glacier, Lago Bianco, Alp Grüm and the circular viaduct at Brusio. A short stop in Tirano, and the coach takes you back to Milan in the late evening.
The panoramic seat is guaranteed at booking when you select that option, but seats inside the car are not assigned, so you sit where there is room. A first-class upgrade is on request only. There is also a version with lunch at Diavolezza in place of the free time in St. Moritz. It costs from $155 per person, rated 4.5 from 4,003 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the panoramic day
Recent reviewers are happy with the train and the guides by name; one found the guide unfriendly. In autumn and winter, note the timing: the train runs in the afternoon, and from late October the light goes early.
How the day works, whichever tour you pick
- Meet early. Coaches leave central Milan in the morning from Milano Centrale, Piazza della Repubblica or Porta Garibaldi, depending on the operator. The voucher has the exact time.
- Bring a passport. The coach crosses into Switzerland. EU and Schengen citizens can use a national ID card; everyone else needs a passport.
- Expect the order to change. Nearly every listing reserves the right to run the day in reverse, and some switch the train leg to the Albula line, St. Moritz to Thusis, on certain dates.
- Eat in Tirano or bring food. Meals are not included on any of these, and St. Moritz is expensive.
- Dress for the pass. It is far colder at 2,253 metres than in Milan, in every month.
Or skip the coach
Trenord runs regional trains from Milano Centrale to Tirano along Lake Como, roughly two and a half hours. From Tirano, a return ticket on the red train to St. Moritz lets you stop at Alp Grüm or Ospizio Bernina and take the next train. It is more planning and more connections, and you have no guide, but you control the day and the time in the mountains.

What Travellers Say About the Day
"Perfect trip and Monica in great and our driver is professional"
"The landscapes are beautiful! It's a magical experience that is definitely worth it. As for the tour guide, Mónica, we felt that she wasn't always very friendly and definitely showed favoritism towards some passengers on the sightseeing tour, which was uncomfortable for the others. Beyond that, the Swiss Alps and the Bernina Train are wonderful."
"We had amazing weather and therefore wery senic ride-worth the day fo sure !"
"A unique experience where you can see nature and magic wherever you go, like a fairy tale. We had a somewhat cloudy day, and it was still wonderful. Our tour guide, Cristina, was super friendly and attentive throughout the trip, explaining everything to us with great precision. All her recommendations were great. We definitely recommend it, especially if it's with her! Thank you for everything. I hope to come back one day."
"I loved everything. The guide, Mário, and the driver, Luca, were exceptional. Friendly, professional, and attentive. The landscapes with the vibrant colors of nature are very special in autumn."
"Cristina our guide was brilliant. She was so knowledgeable and fluent in 3 languages. She was totally focused on the group and its needs and made the day a wonderful experience."
"The tour was excellent. The attention from our guide, Alessandra, was great. The itinerary was very well organized, and it was really worth it."

Bernina Express from Milan: FAQ
What people ask before booking a day trip from Milan to the Bernina train.
Tirano, in Lombardy's Valtellina, is the Italian end of the line. The Rhaetian Railway's station is next to Tirano's Italian railway station, so you can arrive on a Trenord regional train from Milano Centrale or Lake Como and walk across. Day trips from Milan either start the train in Tirano and finish in St. Moritz, or the other way round, with the coach waiting at the far end. The Bernina Express itself runs from Tirano to St. Moritz and on to Chur.
By coach on an organised day trip, or by Trenord regional train from Milano Centrale to Tirano. The train runs along the east shore of Lake Como through Lecco, Varenna and Sondrio, roughly two and a half hours in total (Trenord publishes about 64 minutes for Milan to Varenna). The tours here use a coach and pick you up in central Milan, at Milano Centrale, Piazza della Repubblica or Porta Garibaldi depending on the operator. A return ticket for the red train from Tirano is on the Tirano to St. Moritz page.
From St. Moritz, about four and a half to five hours by train: two hours and a quarter on the Bernina line to Tirano, then about two and a half hours on Trenord to Milan. Faster routes to Milan from elsewhere in Switzerland run through the Gotthard or Simplon tunnels rather than the Bernina line. On a day trip the coach brings you back from Tirano or St. Moritz in about two and a half to three hours, depending on traffic.
Yes if the train ride is what you want from the day; think twice if you dislike long coach journeys. The tours run 11 to 13 hours, of which about two hours are on the train and up to two and a half in St. Moritz; the rest is the coach. Reviewers on the best-rated tours are overwhelmingly positive about the scenery and the guides. The repeated complaints are cramped coach seats, too little time in St. Moritz and the length of the day. Clear weather at the pass makes or breaks it.
Most do not: they use the regional red train in second class, on the same line, because the windows open. Frigerio Viaggi's St. Moritz and Bernina Express day is the exception here, with a guaranteed panoramic-car seat when you choose that option. Most of the others put you in second class on the regional train rather than the panoramic carriage, and the Milano Art Discovery day includes a Bernina train ticket without naming the class. If you want the glass roof, check the option before you pay.
A passport or EU ID card, a warm layer and rain gear, and money for lunch. The coach crosses into Switzerland, so the document is required. The line tops out at Ospizio Bernina, 2,253 metres up, where it is far colder than Milan in any season. None of the day trips include meals; there is time to eat in St. Moritz or Tirano, and St. Moritz prices are Swiss. Swiss francs are useful, though cards are widely accepted.
On paper, Frigerio's panoramic Bernina Express day: its inclusions list about two and a half hours in St. Moritz, though its itinerary shows an hour and a half, and one reviewer of the same operator's Como day got about an hour and a quarter. The Autostradale days list about an hour and a half with a walking tour, TAOTRAVEL's day about 100 minutes, and City Wonders' about an hour. Reviewers on several tours wish they had longer, so if St. Moritz matters to you, check the itinerary of the option you book. Choosing the Diavolezza lunch option on Frigerio's day replaces the St. Moritz free time.
