"This experience is worth having once in a lifetime. 😍 I recommend the regional train, not the Bernina Express. With the regional train, you can stop at any station and take the next one! In St. Moritz, prices are very high, but you can bring everything in your backpack and enjoy it on the wonderful benches there. Linger as long as possible, because it's heaven on earth. Everything is divine. ❤️"

How the Red Train Ticket Works
No guide, no coach, no fixed itinerary. Four things to know before you travel.
Get Yourself to Tirano
The ticket starts at Tirano station. From Milano Centrale, Trenord regional trains run about hourly along Lake Como; from Varenna the ride takes about an hour and a half. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your train.
Pick Any Departure
Morning departures from Tirano run at 07:41, 09:00, 09:41, 11:00, 11:41, 13:00 and 13:14 on the listing's timetable. Check the timetable for your date, which changes with the season.
Get Off Where You Like
This is a regional ticket, so you can leave the train at Alp Grüm, Ospizio Bernina or any other station, explore, and take the next train on. Seats are unreserved: board early in summer.
Bring a Passport or EU ID Card
Tirano is in Italy and St. Moritz is in Switzerland. Carry a passport, or a national ID card if you are an EU or Schengen citizen.

Riding the Red Train Yourself
The regional train, the stations worth stopping at, and how a ticket bought here differs from one bought at the station.
From Tirano the red train climbs about 1,800 metres to the Bernina Pass and drops again into the Engadin at St. Moritz, in a little over two hours on a regional train. You do not need a tour to ride it. A return ticket, a train to Tirano and a free day are enough, and the regional train is the one with windows that open.

The two tickets on this page
| Ticket | Train | Trip | From | Cancellation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tirano to St. Moritz return day ticket (Visit Valtellina) | Regional red train | Return, any departure that day, stops allowed | $123 | Free up to 5 days before |
| Tirano to St. Moritz ticket (Rigamonti Viaggi) | Regional red train, 1st or 2nd class | One-way or return | $75 | Free up to 7 days before |
GetYourGuide prices, checked October 2026. Neither ticket is for the panoramic Bernina Express.
Both are regional tickets with unreserved seats. The Rigamonti ticket lets you choose one-way and first or second class, and its price includes the agency’s booking fee. The Visit Valtellina return comes with a printable timetable and a short guide to the stops. The Rhaetian Railway also sells the same journey on rhb.ch, where an optional seat reservation on the regional trains costs CHF 5 per person (checked October 2026).

The stations worth getting off at
Going up from Tirano, in order:
- Brusio. Just above the village the train turns a full circle on the nine-arch circular viaduct of 1908. You see it best from the train, or from the road below if you stop here.
- Poschiavo. The main town of the valley, with an old centre that is easy to walk in the time between two trains.
- Alp Grüm, 2,091 metres. The station looks straight across to the Palü Glacier and down the valley the line has just climbed out of. One ticket-holder calls it the ideal stop for photography and hiking.
- Ospizio Bernina, 2,253 metres. The highest point of the line, beside Lago Bianco. In winter the lake is frozen white.
- Morteratsch. The stop for the Morteratsch glacier, the large glacier you see from the train on the Engadin side of the pass.
Then Pontresina, Celerina and St. Moritz. One reviewer sums up the main advantage of the regional train: you can stop at any station and take the next one. Another, who only managed one stop, plans to come back in another season to do more.
Regional train or Bernina Express?
On this stretch the regional trains take 2 h 10 to 2 h 35, depending on the train (SBB timetable, checked October 2026), and the Bernina Express does St. Moritz to Tirano in about two and a quarter hours (rhb.ch). What you give up is the panoramic car and a reserved seat. What you gain is the open window, the freedom to stop, and no compulsory reservation. If the glass roof matters more to you, see Bernina Express or the red train and the Bernina Express from Milan days.

What Ticket-Holders Say
"Countryside was beautiful it was hard to know which way to look. Definitely do one side on the trip up and the other on the way back"
"An absolutely amazing experience- love every moment"
"The magnificent Bernina train First Class allows you to travel in comfort. Drinks and snacks are available (for a surcharge). There are pleasant surprises from the Bernina Red Express team. The same ticket can be used for a regional train. It is less comfortable. Please note the different train schedules: Bernina has a different schedule, which you will see when booking a seat. Without purchasing a seat on the official website, you will not be allowed to board the Bernina train! The organizer does not mention this."
"A unique experience... relaxing without getting tired... two hours by train seem like a long time but they go by immediately when you're looking at the landscape... I spent almost the entire trip with my head out the window because every place was worth photographing... I highly recommend it... a must-do experience"
"Simply amazing, what a surreal journey. You have to do it at least once in your life. It's not the Bernina Express; it's the Regional train. I thought it was better because the window opens."
"Incredible view, a unique experience!!!! The train was very nice and clean, and we could get on and off wherever we wanted."
"I have been to the Red Sultan in Tirano and to St. Moritz both in summer and winter. In winter, it's something else."

Tirano to St. Moritz Train: FAQ
Times, tickets and stops on the red train between Italy and the Engadin.
2 h 10 to 2 h 35 on the regional red train, depending on the train, and about two and a quarter hours on the Bernina Express. The regional trains run hourly, alternating a faster RegioExpress of about 2 h 12 with a stopping train of 2 h 30 to 2 h 35 (SBB timetable, checked October 2026); the 09:41 from Tirano, for example, reaches St. Moritz at 12:11. The Rhaetian Railway gives about two hours fifteen minutes for the Bernina Express between St. Moritz and Tirano (rhb.ch, checked October 2026). If you get off on the way, add the wait for the next train.
Regional trains leave Tirano for St. Moritz several times each morning; the return ticket here lists 07:41, 09:00, 09:41, 11:00, 11:41, 13:00 and 13:14. The Bernina Express runs on its own timetable: its high season ends on 25 October 2026 and its low season, with fewer trains, starts on 26 October; the national timetable then changes on 13 December 2026 (rhb.ch). Times change by season, so check the timetable for your exact date before you set off.
Yes, at the Rhaetian Railway station in Tirano, or online on rhb.ch. Booking ahead through this page fixes the date and price and includes a timetable and stop guide; the Rigamonti ticket's price includes the agency's fee. On the regional trains a seat reservation is optional, at CHF 5 per person through RhB. The panoramic Bernina Express needs a reservation in all cases.
Yes, on the regional train: get off at any station and take the next train on, as long as you finish on your ticket's date. Alp Grüm, for the Palü Glacier, and Ospizio Bernina, at the pass beside Lago Bianco, are the most popular stops. The panoramic Bernina Express does not allow this in the same way, because seats are reserved for a specific train.
The scenery is the same either way; what changes is the light and which side you want to sit on. Going down from St. Moritz you start among glaciers and end among palms and vineyards in Tirano; going up you build towards the pass. Travellers commonly recommend the left side going north from Tirano and the right side going south. One reviewer's advice works in both directions: take one side on the way up and the other on the way back.
Yes: carry a passport, or a national ID card if you are an EU or Schengen citizen. The line crosses from Italy into Switzerland at Campocologno, just above Tirano. Both tickets here list a passport or ID card as required.
